How Did Ancient Egyptians Treat Eye Diseases?

Eye problems were common in ancient Egypt, partly because people lived in a hot, dusty environment. Ancient Egyptian doctors recognized eye diseases and injuries and developed different treatments for them.

Eye Medicine in Ancient Egypt

Medical papyri show that ophthalmology was already a recognized area of Egyptian medicine. The Ebers Papyrus, more than 3,500 years old, contains medical knowledge covering many conditions, including problems affecting the eyes and eyelids.

Egyptian physicians used preparations made from natural substances. These could be prepared in different forms and applied according to the condition being treated.

Protecting the Eyes From Dust

Dust and sand were major problems in the Egyptian environment. Ancient Egyptian medical texts contain treatments intended to deal with eye irritation and other problems affecting the eyes and eyelids.

Some remedies were probably intended to soothe or protect the eyes, although we cannot assume that every ancient treatment was medically effective by modern standards.

Did They Understand Eye Diseases Correctly?

Not completely.

Egyptian doctors had considerable practical experience, but they did not have microscopes, modern eye examinations, antibiotics, or surgical technology.

Their approach combined observation, experience, natural substances, and religious beliefs. Some treatments may have provided relief, while others would not meet modern medical standards.

An Early Tradition of Eye Medicine

What makes ancient Egyptian medicine remarkable is that eye problems were not ignored. They were observed, described, and treated as a specific medical concern.

The surviving medical papyri give us a glimpse into a world where Egyptian physicians were already trying to understand why people lost their sight, suffered eye injuries, or developed painful eye conditions.

More than three thousand years later, these records remain an important part of the history of medicine.
